Huawei and Honor oust Apple from the Chinese mobile phone market: An epic victory

Huawei has made an impressive comeback in the Chinese mobile phone market, overtaking Apple to take the leading position. Latest data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) testify to the revival of Huawei, which marks a significant shift in the smartphone industry. Huawei became the world's largest mobile phone brand in 2019 before it was hit by a US ban that halted its business with American companies. Despite this setback, Huawei is gradually regaining its position in the mobile phone market.

Highlights of the IDC report

The IDC report for the first quarter of 2024 shows the impressive performance of Huawei, thanks to which the brand took the second position in the Chinese mobile phone market. Honor, a former subsidiary of Huawei, took first place with a market share of 17,1%, demonstrating the company's resilience. Oppo took third place with a market share of 15,7%, while Apple was far behind with a market share of 15,6%. Vivo took fifth place with a market share of 14,6%.

Despite speculation that Huawei's resurgence would negatively impact Honor, market data over the past two quarters suggests otherwise. Honor emerged unscathed and even took first place in overall Chinese market share, providing a significant boost to the smartphone market's recovery.

Thanks to the strong performance of Honor and Huawei, the overall Android mobile phone market grew by 9,3% year-on-year.

The impact of artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in the modern smartphone market. IDC predicts rapid growth in the share of AI mobile phones in China, with more than 2027 million units expected to be sold in 150, accounting for more than 50% of the market. Honor, which has focused on AI technology since its inception, has become an industry leader by offering an enhanced user experience with platforms such as MagicOS 8.0.

AI-powered computers

Honor started introducing AI technology to smartphones back in 2016, setting the stage for AI at the platform level. This strategic investment in AI has put Honor at the forefront of intelligent mobile technology.
