Qualcomm just announced its next-generation augmented and virtual reality platforms. With the rapid growth of AR/VR platforms, as evidenced by the launch of Apple's Vision Pro, Qualcomm wants to offer manufacturers a powerful and complete platform to develop such solutions. Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and AR Gen 1 enable mixed and virtual reality. One of Qualcomm's main tasks in the new generation is to enable manufacturers to create thin and light devices that do not require massive batteries. With the new platforms, OEMs will have a good chance to try their hand at this field, which will soon become more popular with the release of Apple's Vision Pro
Highlights of Qualcomm's new AR/VR launch:
- The Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform delivers significant performance innovation with a 2,5x increase in GPU performance and an 8x improvement AI1.
- The Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform is the first dedicated processor for thin smart glasses.
- Both platforms provide on-device AI to create more complex, immersive and personalized experiences.
- Qualcomm remains the spatial computing platform of choice for leading XR players.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon XR Gen 2 is the more interesting chip of the duo. It offers support for MR (Mixed Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) devices with 2,5 times better GPU performance compared to its predecessor. It also has 8x better AI performance for tasks and offers support for up to 10 cameras and sensors. It also supports 2 3K displays and has the latest Spectra ISP on board.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform aims for lightweight mixed reality smart glasses. In addition, it allows you to record and broadcast live broadcasts directly from the glasses, perform visual search and translation in real time.
The Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform will power Meta Quest 3
Interestingly, both platforms are developed in collaboration with Meta. They will debut on new Meta devices soon. For example, the upcoming Meta Quest 3 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform. Meanwhile, the Ray-Ban Meta Smart glasses will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 platform. Other OEMs will also be able to develop their own devices on this platform until 2024.
