After many arguments and several dramas caused by dangerous challenges; TikTok is trying to strengthen the protection of minors on its platform. The social network talked about the Content Levels system, which prevents young users from accessing adult content.
As you may know, TikTok has been trying to rebuild its image over the past few months. The fault is several dangerous challenges, which for some have led to tragedies. The last are two girls aged 8 and 9 who lost their lives trying to recreate the challenge on July 6, 2022.
Shortly after this tragedy, an authoritative insider published information that a new system was being tested in TikTok. This was a function to limit access of minors to adult content.
To make the app safer, TikTok will introduce content filters and maturity ratings
However, this Wednesday, July 13, 2022, the app finally provided the details of this system in an official blog post. The purpose of this feature, called Content Levels, is to offer different levels of content tailored to the age of the audience.
“As we continue to build and improve these systems, we're excited to contribute to the industry's long-term challenges of building recommendation systems for diverse audiences. We also recognize that what we are trying to achieve is difficult and we may make some mistakes," the social network reports.
So, in the coming weeks, the app will introduce the first version of Content Levels to prevent content with adult themes from reaching users under 18. In fact, when a video has an adult theme or is intended for an adult audience, it will be assigned a "mature" rating (we can compare this to the PEGI system used, for example, in video games).
