DJI has officially announced two new flagship Mavic 3 drones. And, as usual, the flagship products come with big prices: the base model Mavic 3 will cost $2199, and the older Mavic 3 Cine will cost more than twice as much at $4999.
The more expensive Mavic 3 Cine supports the Apple ProRes 422 HQ codec and shoots with a resolution of 5.1K and a speed of up to 50 frames per second. The board has a built-in and non-volatile solid-state drive of 1 TB.
The $3 entry-level Mavic 2199 lacks ProRes support and a built-in SSD, but uses the same dual-camera system with a 4/3-format CMOS sensor. In both cases, 4K resolution is supported at a speed of up to 120 frames per second, and you can also take a 20-megapixel photo. In addition to the main 24 mm lens, there is a 28x hybrid zoom lens.
Both drones have a flight time of 46 minutes, which is a big step up from the previous generation Mavic 2 (31 minutes). The new devices are successors to 2's DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2018 Zoom, which debuted with Hasselblad cameras after DJI acquired the company in 2017.
Like three years ago, the new drones support Hasselblad Natural Color Solution. If you don't need it, you can choose the 10-bit D-Log profile, which will give you more control over color during processing. In addition to ProRes, you can use the standard H.264 and H.265 codecs, but the Mavic 3 does not support HDR.
DJI introduces the flagship Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine dual-camera drones
DJI has updated the autonomous functions of the drone. Like its predecessor, the Mavic 3 supports omni-directional obstacle detection, but now objects are detected at a distance of up to 200 m, compared to only 20 m in the previous version. The advanced return-to-home (RTH) function allows the drone to more efficiently find its way to the take-off point.
An updated APAS 5.0 pilot assistance system and updated ActiveTrack 5.0 object tracking technology have been announced, but the latter won't be available for some time. The company's communication technology has also been updated: the range of OcuSync 3+ is up to 15 km, 1080p video streaming at 60 frames per second to a smartphone or controller is supported.
The $3 base Mavic 2199 includes the drone itself, a carrying strap, a remote control, a charger, a set of extra propellers, and a joystick. The $3 Mavic 2999 Fly More Combo Kit includes two extra batteries, a charging hub, four sets of propellers, a carry bag that converts to a backpack, and a set of ND filters (ND4, ND8, ND16, and ND32). The most expensive Cine Premium combo kit at $4999 includes the new DJI RC Pro as well as an additional set of neutral density filters (ND64, ND128, ND256 and ND512).
