Facebook, as we know, is no more. Instead, we now have Matt. This doesn't mean that the social network will be called Meta (at least not yet), but it does mean that Facebook will no longer be the brand for the entire ecosystem. In other words, it's Facebook Inc. which is changing its name to differentiate itself from its apps and other social networks. For example, Instagram and WhatsApp will now be part of Meta, not just Facebook. Interestingly, the name "Meta" seems to be building for the future "metauniverse" of the company.
Meta - Welcome to the Metaverse
By the way, this new structure is reminiscent of what Google did a few years ago. The search giant behind the business restructured into Alphabet. The holding company now manages Google alongside DeepMind and Nest. Facebook has said in the past that it plans to separate Facebook Reality Labs, its AR and VR group, from the rest of the company when it reports its financial results.
As already mentioned, the new name clearly indicates future ambitions for the metaverse. The brand wants to transform from a social network into a meta-universe company — no matter how futuristic it may seem. In fact, Facebook wants to develop by using VR and AR to create a parallel world.
The company even presented an early version of the Horizon Workrooms project. It allows people to hold meetings in VR. The company also announced new Horizon Home and Horizon Venues features. Earlier this month, the company announced plans to hire about 10 new employees in Europe. These workers will assist the Meta in its goal of creating a metauniverse.
Нове ім’я на тлі скандалу з Facebook Papers
Interestingly, the name change happened at just the right moment. Facebook is currently struggling with the "Facebook Papers" scandal.
The documents became the basis for a series of complaints to the Securities and Exchange Commission. A few years ago, the company also dealt with user privacy issues.
Meta also sounds like a way to ditch Facebook's legacy name if needed. Let's see what the future holds for us.
