The cost of flagships is increasing year by year. There are many reasons for this, they may change, but the trend itself remains unchanged. Each new generation offers faster and more powerful chips, improved graphics, better image quality, larger battery capacity, faster charging and, of course, more memory.
Smartphones with top MediaTek and Qualcomm chips are getting more expensive
In 2022, the schedule will remain the same. Flagships will offer more advanced features and users will have to pay for them out of pocket. A further increase in capabilities, primarily technical, will be accompanied by an inevitable increase in the price of smartphones. The shortage of chips, which is unlikely to be overcome this year, also increases the cost of devices. One of the factors that will lead to an increase in the price of flagships will be the appearance of new top chips — Snapdragon 898 and Dimensity 2000.
The performance and power efficiency gains from the 4nm technology will keep the Dimensity 2000 and Snapdragon 898 flagships from falling below $775. This prediction was made by a well-known network insider. Didital Chat Station.
It turns out that those saving up to buy a 2022 flagship should be willing to pay more than last year's top-of-the-line devices.
Global shortage of microcircuits
TrendForce recently analyzed the situation in the chipset developer segment in the second quarter of this year: this part of the semiconductor industry showed rapid growth, due to the global shortage of microcircuits and increased demand for them.
According to available data, the total revenue of the top ten chip makers reached $29,9 billion, which is 60,8% more than in the second quarter of 2020, when the result was $18,6 billion.
So, Qualcomm leads the rating of developers of non-independently produced chipsets with a turnover of 6,47 billion dollars. Growth in annual terms was 70,0%, which, in particular, was due to high demand for 5G solutions.
In second place is NVIDIA: the company's quarterly revenue grew by 68,8% to $5,84 billion. At the same time, the gaming graphics accelerator segment grew by 91,1%.
Rounding out the top three is Broadcom, with $4,95 billion and a 19,2% increase. High demand for Ethernet controllers and Wi-Fi 6E chips.
The success of MediaTek and AMD, which occupy the fourth and fifth places, respectively, should be noted. These companies showed an almost 100% increase in turnover — up to $4,49 billion and $3,85 billion.
