MediaTek defeats Qualcomm and becomes the leader in the mobile SoC market
Second place in the second quarter of this year was taken by Qualcomm, which accounted for 28% of the mobile chip market and fell by 4% year-on-year. Apple was in third place, with a share of 14%. This is a similar result to last year, but also 7% less than in the fourth quarter of last year. There is every reason to say that according to the results of the third and fourth quarters of the current year, Apple will strengthen its position and against the background of the start of sales of the iPhone 13, its share will increase.
In fourth place was UNISOC with 9% market share, which is 5% more than in the second quarter of 2020. Samsung managed to get into the TOP-5, whose chips accounted for only 7% of the market, and in the second quarter of 2020 this figure was 12%. As expected, the outsider was HiSilicon (Huawei), whose share fell to 3%, while a year earlier it was five times more β 16%.
If we talk about the segment of 5G chips, the undisputed leader in the second quarter was the manufacturer of Qualcomm chips. It controls 55% of the market compared to 29% a year earlier.
MediaTek records record smartphone AP/SoC supply share of 43% in Q2021 XNUMX
Director of Research Dale Guy said:
βMediaTek dominated the smartphone SoC market with the highest share of 43%, thanks to a competitive 5G portfolio in the low-mid segment and without severe supply constraints. Compared to Qualcomm, MediaTek benefited from fewer supply constraints in the first half of 2021, including from RFICs (radio frequency integrated circuits), power management ICs (PMICs) and TSMC's stable production. Deliveries of 4G SoCs have further helped MediaTek strengthen its leadership position.β
Commenting on the rise in baseband 5G smartphone shipments, analyst Parvo Sharma said:
βQualcomm dominated the 5G core bandwidth market with a 55% share. It benefited from the 5G baseband modem chipset in Apple's iPhone 12 series and strong demand for complete 5G SoC chipsets, from the flagship 8 Series to the affordable 4 Series. However, Qualcomm would have delivered more chipsets had the San Diego-based supplier not been affected by supply constraints and profitability issues in the first half of 2021. As a result, Qualcomm has diversified and secured additional capacity, starting with TSMC and other component companies at the end of the second quarter of 2021. This should help the vendor optimize component supply and regain share lost to MediaTek in the coming quarters.β
