Why you should not buy a Helio G95 smartphone in 2021

Helio G95 — a popular set of microcircuits in the mid-range market. MediaTek G-series chipsets have dominated the budget and mid-range market thanks to their high GPU performance. But there are some things about the Helio G95 that make it a bad choice in 2021.

If you're going to buy a mid-range device today, chances are your device will be powered by the Helio G95. So should you buy it because of its high performance or give it up because it has no future? Let's check the details below.

First of all, let me briefly introduce the Helio G95. The Helio G90T was launched in 2019 and debuted with the Redmi Note 8 Pro. I used the smartphone and I was impressed by its power. It truly was heaven for gamers on a budget.

PUBG Mobile? You were getting this at an incredible 60fps frame rate, which was not possible with similar Snapdragon processors. In 2020, the Helio G90T was rebranded as the Helio G95 with a slightly higher GPU frequency. Not a huge performance improvement, but we know it was done purely for hype.

Minus 1: Outdated architecture

The processor is based on the 12-nm FinFET process. It comes with 2 large ARM Cortex-A76 cores with a frequency of up to 2,05 GHz and 6 small and energy-efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores (max. 2 GHz) in two clusters. Pretty decent in terms of cores, but 12nm is an outdated architecture. Comparing it to its biggest competitor let's remind, that the Snapdragon 732G is based on Samsung's 8nm process. 12 nm is one of the biggest drawbacks of the processor. Not only does this mean the chipset gets hot, but the battery life is also mediocre.

Minus 2: No 5G

Another disadvantage of the Helio G95 processor is the lack of 5G connectivity. As I mentioned earlier, the Helio G95 is a rebrand of the Helio G90T, which means it has the same network capabilities. The G95 only supports 4G LTE connections. It is not future proof compared to Dimensity or Snapdragon 5G chipsets.

The final verdict

The Helio G90T was a great processor in 2018. But companies milking the same processor in 2021 don't make sense. In my opinion, you should go for other chipsets.

If future proofing is your concern, go with Dimensity chipsets. They work great and have the latest 5G connectivity.

For gaming, you'll have to give up 5G in the mid-range market, but you can get the Snapdragon 860 on the POCO X3 Pro. It is based on Samsung's 8nm process and will perform much better compared to the Helio G95.

I have always been interested in IT technologies. And since my previous many years of professional activity (which is design and pre-press preparation) is not possible without their help, it so happened that everything that was related to computers (for example, collecting and modernizing "hardware", as well as configuring software ) I always had to do it myself.

Well, with the advent of gadgets in our lives, the scope of my interests expanded to include them as well.

I like to study and analyze the capabilities of various devices, and for many years, before buying anything new, I always study the capabilities of each potential model for a long time and carefully, spend quite a long and painstaking work, read reviews, reviews and comparisons.

The reward for my time is usually that most of the time I really do get the best of what I can get within my budget.
