OnePlus founder Liu Tsuohu yesterday released an internal email with the statement:
“On the unanimous recommendation of the core management teams of OnePlus and OPPO, we have decided to merge the OnePlus team and the OPPO team. OnePlus will become an independent brand under OPPO."
Both have the same roots
Related parties OPPO and OnePlus have confirmed the merger. Based on information provided by multiple people familiar with the matter, there are two main reasons behind the OPPO and OnePlus merger.
Both OPPO and OnePlus are companies controlled by Guangdong-based BBK Electronics. But beyond the supply chain and distribution of production, the brands have always operated independently. Their positioning on the market is also different.
However, the situation has changed over the past two years. In May 2020, Liu Tsuohu returned to OPPO as Product Director responsible for OPPO and OnePlus product lines. In March 2021, the new OnePlus 9 series smartphone OnePlus ditched the original Hydrogen OS and adopted the same ColorOS operating system as OPPO phones.
New opportunities
Before you know it, the second reason for this alliance is the wider opportunities in the EV market. As you know, many non-traditional car manufacturers have already started to enter this market.
In fact, there are too many brands in the smartphone market. That's why traditional smartphone manufacturers looked for other niches to create products. As a result, they already offer wireless headsets, laptops, smart home appliances and more. In this sense, OnePlus and OPPO made a completely logical decision. By combining the teams and their power, they will be able to design and produce cars that can compete with the existing brands.
In addition, they work in the same company. Thus, owners of OnePlus and OPPO smartphones have no reason to worry about system support.
