HMD Global doesn't have the most attractive Nokia smartphones to date, but it's definitely one of the companies that offers the best support for its current devices. This year, we see that Nokia is clearly focusing on the mid-range and low-end segments. The recently launched Nokia X10, X20, G10, G20, C10 and C20 clearly demonstrate this. We don't know if the company will release a new flagship after all these years, but it's great to see a brand constantly updating its low- and mid-range devices. Today, the brand is rolling out the Android 11 update for the Nokia 4.2, which hit the market with Android 9 Pie.
Nokia 4.2 was introduced back in May 2019 with Android 9 Pie. It received the Android 10 update in April last year and is now getting its second major update in the form of Android 11. The two major updates don't come as a big surprise to Nokia enthusiasts around the world. After all, all smartphones released by the brand are part of the Android One program. The program provides at least two major Android updates and three years of security patches. With all that, we assume that Android 11 is the last update for the Nokia 4.2, which probably won't get Android 12. The device may still receive new security patches until May 2022.
The new firmware update comes with version number 3.150 and requires a 1,5GB download. It brings the Android security patch level up to March 2021 on Nokia smartphones. Unfortunately, it didn't get the latest April patch, but it's better to have the March patch than the one before. In addition to the new security patch, we have a whole bunch of Android 11 goodies. The list of additions includes one-time app permissions, chat bubbles, updated notifications, new media controls and smart device shortcuts in the power menu. The update is currently rolling out to the following markets:
