Google Pixel 5 received 74 points in the DxOMark display test

DxOMark is a very well-known company in camera reviews. However, recently the site has also been testing smartphone displays. At the moment, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the king of smartphones with the best image quality. Today, we finally got to know the actual results that the Google Pixel 5 brought. Unfortunately, the device scores only 74 points, which is far from the flagship smartphones of 2020, and even loses to non-flagship devices like the Vivo X51 5G.

For a quick comparison, in August 2020, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra scored around 89 points. Later, the variant with Snapdragon gained one point more and is now the leader of the rating with 90 points. As mentioned above, the Vivo X51 was released around the same time as the Pixel 5, but it has slightly higher performance than the Pixel 5. Both devices have FHD+ AMOLED panels with a 90Hz refresh rate. However, Vivo X51 scored 87 points – 13 points higher than Google's flagship.

The Pixel 5 is inferior to other flagship devices in this segment, but this is not a big surprise. With the latest Pixel smartphone, Google has made it clear that it is no longer interested in the high-end segment. The device came with a mid-range Snapdragon 765G 5G chipset. While it's a decent chipset, it falls behind the Pixel 4's Snapdragon 855 SoC in terms of performance. The Pixel 4 XL performed well on DisplayMate. The device received an A + rating. For this reason, some Pixel enthusiasts expected the $699 smartphone to have similar quality.

According to DxOMark, the Google Pixel 5 performs poorly in the test for readability and video quality. However, it has advantages, such as the use of Ambient Light, good touch accuracy, video without dropping frames. However, this is not enough to prevent a low score. In low-light conditions, the display's brightness level seems lower. Moreover, the readability factor for improving sunlight illumination seems to change the color of the images too much. Other disadvantages include low brightness and contrast when watching videos. In addition, reviewers experienced stuttering during games, slow light transitions and more.

The device has a 6-inch panel with FHD + resolution (1080 x 2340 pixels, ratio 19,5: 9, density 432 ppi). It has a hole in the screen, aligned to the top left, which serves as a home for the selfie camera. OLED-type panel with Gorilla Glass 6 coating. Unfortunately, its overall performance seems to be a disappointment for those looking for a premium experience. I hope Google doesn't disappoint with the next Pixel.
