As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, many companies had to initiate a "work at home" protocol. This includes the Silicon Valley tech giant, Google. However, as the effects of the pandemic gradually fade, people are starting to return to the office.
Returning to the office after about 10 months away can be a daunting task. In its recent annual (10-K) report to regulators, Google warned that the company was suffering from negative effects on operational efficiency and financial results.
This happens as a result of a long period of work at home, as well as a sudden return to office mode.
Google is a company with great advantages in Silicon Valley. The state currently employs 135 full-time employees, as well as an equal number of contract (contract) workers through third-party labor firms.
In its annual report, Google notes:
“In 2021, when we return to operating in more locations, we will face increased costs. For example, we should prepare office space and try a mixed office model. In addition, these factors will also affect our ability to compete effectively and maintain our corporate culture."
Google work from home will continue until the end of this year
In March 2020, Google required employees to work from home. Last September, Google CEO Pichai said that Google had started a hybrid office model that includes rearranging office spaces and planning for long-term homework options.
At the end of last year, Pichai sent an email to employees in which they announced that home office hours would be extended until September 1, 2021. However, Google is also increasing its on-site office hours. This will require employees to work in the office at least three days a week. Additionally, employees may have to live within commuting distance of office space.
Google's policy on working from home is stricter than that of companies like Twitter and Facebook.
Google also said in its annual report that the government's lockdown order would "severely impact" the ability of workers and suppliers to work effectively.
“From a global perspective, government blocking methods are not uniform. When will the government allow us to fully work in the office? It's not clear, and limitations exist in different environments."
Google also mentioned the negative impact that working from home for long periods of time during the pandemic could have on the company. It involves a reduction in Internet advertising revenue, office equipment requirements, potential sales opportunities, and more.
