Samsung Display recently demonstrated an OLED display that can display bright and clear in the outdoor environment. Samsung Display today announced that its latest OLED display for smartphones has been certified by global safety company UL for its excellent “sunlight visibility”.
During the evaluation, UL tested two aspects that affect the visibility of the display outdoors: color gamut and brightness. He found that in an open environment, the color gamut of Samsung's new OLED meets 73% of the DCI-P3 standard, and the maximum brightness exceeds 1500 nits.
The new OLED uses a new type of organic material that achieves a brightness of 1500 nits or higher. This further improves outdoor visibility.
This new display completely eliminates the dimming effect of outdoor smartphone displays. It is completely free from issues of visibility on the street. Samsung explains that this is possible because the display displays colors thanks to a proprietary light emission process that covers a wide color gamut.
The result is a high degree of saturation, as well as intense color. Thanks to this feature, OLED displays can now display clear image quality even in bright lighting conditions.
Dennis Choi, vice president and group head of mobile display marketing at Samsung Display, said:
"In the age of 5G, people are spending more hours on their smartphones. It is very important that we provide a display that provides bright and clear image quality both indoors and outdoors.”
He adds: "While it can be used with many types of smartphones, Samsung's new OLED is particularly well-suited to 5G devices as it will provide greater usability and therefore greater value for consumers."
This display uses the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra
This display is what we have on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, after the latest UL inspection, more smartphone manufacturers will use this display. At this time, we cannot say which manufacturer will contact Samsung regarding this display. However, you can rest assured that this is the flagship display for now.
According to Samsung, the new OLED display uses organic light-emitting materials to express colors. In the absence of illumination, organic materials can emit light under voltage.
Consequently, the luminous efficiency of organic materials can greatly affect the color gamut, brightness, HDR, outdoor visibility and power consumption of the display screen.
Samsung Display has developed new organic materials to increase the speed of electron movement in the organic material layer, thereby significantly improving light efficiency. This means that the new materials can emit brighter light while consuming less energy. In the era of 5G, which increases video viewing time, it can help improve the battery life of smartphones.
The display screen is an important component that affects the battery life of the smartphone. By reducing the power consumption of the display screen, you can improve the battery life of the smartphone.
